If you are a miner, or factory worker go to the doctor immediately. You may actually have material in your lung from your job that may need to be removed by a professional.
If they are actually hard, rock like things, go to the doctor immediately. Save what ever you cough up in a zip lock bag and take it with you to the emergency room.
If the "rocks" are soft and squishy and it is just one or 2, it may just be one of those things. Some times mucus can settle and solidify.
If it is more than that, get to the doctor, I have no idea...Everything else doesn't get into your lungs if you have a "clean" "safe" job.

Tonsils have small pockets or "crypts" that can catch food particles as they are being swallowed. These small pieces of food remain trapped and gradually rot, producing a powerful unpleasant odor. To check for these, use a flashlight and look at your throat. The tonsils are reddish and slightly swollen appearing tissues to the sides of your throat. Look for small creamy-white particles caught in and around your tonsils. If you have these, they may be the major source of your halitosis! To remove these, use a water pik at the lowest setting and gently blast them out of your tonsils - this takes practice!!! Another option is to visit your dentist where the stones can be vacuumed out with a small suction tip. If you dislodge a tonsil stone, pick it up and smell it... awful!

look up bronchiolitis in Wikipedia. A friend just got diagnosed with this after he was coughing up stones. The stones are calcified, like kidney stones. One comment said save one to take to doctor. He is correct, do carry one into the doc.

I suggest saving a few take them to your doctor or your dentist tell them the where this came from story. They can order a lab test to tell you what the little white stones are made of. This is what I would do. I hope this answer was helpful.

i asked a doc about it, and was told it was normal...
here's some information for you though...
Tonsil Stones are irregularly shaped, whitish/yellow, foul-smelling globs of mucous and bacteria that get caught in the back of the throat. They form in the tonsil crypts which are simply small pockets or divots that appear in everyones tonsils. The scientific name for these white globs is tonsilloliths.
