For the same reason that we don't need Americans coming over here and trying to tell us how to run our country

Simon Cowel's presence here I will not even try to figure out or explain, but the Nanny is here because of a stereotype, and a fascination.. Americans are fascinated by the British, their royalty, the class system, and the accents. It is something different than we have here in the US. When Americans think of the British class system they think of all the TV and movies they have seen on the subject. They think about the hired staff in the upper class households. And the uniformed, strict British Nanny comes to mind. Butlers must be stoic, housekeepers gossipy, and the Nanny who teaches manners, and how to adopt the "stiff upper lip", and brings the children to their mothers for the daily appointment. All stereotypes.
I've seen the show, and I was impressed by how quickly the kids started to mind. If only the parents were so cooperative. Now that I have seen it, I see it doesn't take a British Nanny, it just is several techniques that work, anyone could have thought them up.

That's only two people, I do agree about that guy's attitude (Simon) is terrible, I can't stand him, nor do I watch that show. He is rude, nasty and not likeable. I don't care for it.

However Jo from ABC The Nanny, is great, and does such a good job with parents and children, it has nothing to do with her being British or not, I think you should have more of an open mind, what does being British have to do with doing a great job and setting guidelines and great examples on how to raise and educate children as well as great tips. It's not that America is dumb either, it is simply that things get difficult with children and it's not just in the US.

As for Simon he is just part of the judges and does a very poor job. He is not telling anyone what to do, none would listen to him anyhow, with that attitude.

It's a fad, like any other. The USA is currently obsessed with the proper, no-nonsense, "authoritarian" persona of the British.... just a stereotype, really. As if just having the British accent makes a person automatically smarter and more cultured. Example: the show "So You Think You Can Dance" obviously copied the model for the judges' panel from "American Idol" - one friendly, soft-tempered woman (Paula); one fairly cool, objective, sorta middle-of-the-road guy (Randy); and one stodgy, smart-alec, negative British S.O.B. (the great Simon). It's like the new American TV tradition- the token Brithish guy!

This, (in the same way you like the british - i like americans) is quite tied in to the fact that America tells the rest of the world how to do things. I dislike some, like others. I suggest you look atthe british within america in the same way - some advice shouldbe heeded, others disregarded. The only way up is through careful attention to others' suggestions and advice.

Peace

My Great Grandfather was born here. My family is traced back to the Mayflower. A member of my family has fought in every war we have ever been in.I believe my family came here because of religous reasons. My family's deed to the farm in Ohio does not say State of Ohio. It says Northwest Reserve Territory. One tradition that has stayed with my family is the aged members do not go to what we used to call "Rest Homes. Family takes care of family best. The children in my family take care of their parents until they are with us no more. I passed along to my nephew, a couple years ago, my Grandfathers long gun that he carried at Gettysberg. Before my father passed away I walked the battlefield with him and he related the stories that his father told him of the battle the many times that they went there for memorials for the Civil War veterans. I can remember as a young child having to work on the farm during summers picking strawberrys. There was no indoor plumbing. When my uncle would plow the corn fields we would walk behind the tractor and find arrowheads. Like your family, mine grew or raised everything that got them through the winters. Now people do not think they can survive without a cell phone.

I don't believe that the British people do it anymore than anyone else, but it makes for more interesting TV for someone with an accent telling a singer that they are terrible. As for the nanny's....Mary Poppins?

Well, the British are known for their sense of humour and their (funny) sarcasms. So it's a good idea for them to be a judge on a TV show.

As for the Nanny, maybe in America it looks like the British have better educational skills, and they look more "strict" (although that's just a stereotype).

And it's "hip" to have a foreigner on a show, I guess.

Reality Shows are a trend presently going on in the US. Take it with a grain of salt. It's most likely a stereotype Americans have seen of English nanny's watching your PBS Masterpiece theatre, or Mystery, etc. Don't worry about it, we know that you are just as diverse in class and culture as we are.

And look how we have more people in prison than any outher country. And we still have the death penalty. And... And... And..... And read the replies to this one!!!!! hee-hee

Even if you think you know it all, intelligent people ask questions and listen. People who do all the talking, advice giving most of the time just like to hear themselves talk.

Listen and choose what you want to hear. If you don't want to hear them, turn them off. But in America, the last time I checked everyone has the right to "Free Speech".
