We got our 'mile' from the Romans, it is mille, the distance a Roman soldier could walk in 1,000 paces. That is if you lead off with your right foot how far you travel when you follow up with your left foot, what we might consider to be two paces.

Therefore, one step is half of one pace, so if 1,750 yards is 1,000 paces, then one step would be equal to 0.875 yards.

Multiply that by 10,000 and you have 5 miles. But of course with better diet and health we are all now a little taller so a rough guess could push that up to nearer six miles in today's money.

Hope that helps.

About 5 miles

Assuming an average pace (2 steps) of 3 feet, with 5,280 feet in the mile, that would be 5,280 / 1.5 = 3520 steps per mile. So 10,000 steps would be 2.840909 miles or thereabouts.

It really does depend on the size of your stride. If you're a soldier, for instance, you'd be stepping out approximately 1 yard (just under 1 metre). If you're one of those Japanese girls that used to have their feet tied together to limits their stride pattern, your steps will only be about 3 or 4 inches.

Striding-out like you've got somewhere to go, it's about six miles.

10,000 metres is 6 and a bit miles, a good walking stride is about a yard (i.e. just less than a metre).

Figure each step is about 3 feet. that's 30000 feet divided by 5280 feet in a mile gives you about 5.6 miles

I think about 5 - as they are both the recommended amount of walking we're supposed to do everyday.
