Depression is a serious illness so you're right to seek help. It is not "all in your head," and usually one can not just "snap out of it" (if it were that easy, the sufferer would obviously do it).

There are various antidepressant medications one can take and therapy often helps. For many, a combination of the two usually suffices, although mood change doesn't occur overnight (meds generally take two weeks before you begin to feel better).

Take one day at a time. Worrying about possible future events (what if I seek out help and that doesn't work?) is common, but often misplaced. More often than not, it will work given time.

I have been depressed, so I know what it's like. Therapy and medication (anxiety and panic attacks accompanied my depression) helped, and I began to pay attention to the things I was telling myself. I no longer allow my "inner critic" to take over, and I evaluate the "fairness" of the things I say about myself. Is what I'm saying accurate? If not, I stop saying it.

There many therapists that are not effective. Too many are screwed up themselves to help anybody else. Switch therapists if you can. Are you following the therpist's advice? If you you are not following their advice, then you are wasting your time. Meds do not always work. They work for some but not all people. Depression in a nutshell is feeling sad when you have no reason to feel sad. It is not irrational, but it creates a real feeling. What your family said was one of the WORSE things you can say to somebody who is depressed. What I found to be effective for them to see the world from different prespectitives and show them that nobody is perfect. (how boring life life would be if we were!) Also being sad about your grandmas death is NOT depression unless she died 5-10 years ago. Good luck!

Okay, Hon- I say you've got a very real problem. In fact, several very real problems. Have you tried telling your doctor that you don't think you're seeing an improvement?

You're dealing with depression, a lump in your thyroid- have you had that looked at, by the way?, a recent death, and a new baby. So you are no hypochodriac.

You need to find someone who can help you take care of your son, and get your thyroid fixed. And see about treatment that will help you better.

Gooc luck!

I went through a period of depression and my therapist helped a great deal. I was on Prozac for about 6 months and I have never been on it since. The meds are not designed to be on long-term. When used with therapy, it works really well. Your therapist will help you get out of the slump you're in. Sometimes, when a lot of depressing or sad things happen at once, you get stuck in a rut of feeling blue. Your therapist will help you cope and maybe prescribe some meds for a period of time. Either way, you will feel much better soon! Good luck!

After what you have been through you have every right to be depressed. I am glad that you are seeing a therapist. If you dont feel that you are getting better tell your therapist or doctor, they may have to adjust your meds. Sorry hon but what took years to get you this way is not going to fix itself overnight. Keep putting one foot in front of the other. If you cant take it one day at a time, do it for 5 minutes.
My source???? I have depression too.

Don't get yourself all upset. There are good drugs out there to help you with your depression. I know exactly how you feel with your family saying that you are a hypocondriac because my family still says that about me and i am 46 years old. They tell me my Bipolar Disorder is all in my head. Well Dah yes it is in my head. Ignore them and see your psychiatrist and see about getting on medications to control the depression. Do you get told you are just looking for attention too? Don't believe it because only you know how you feel inside. I am very sorry to hear about your grandma and if you are worried about your spelling use the spell check.

I became severly depressed after having open heart surgery. I was a real basket case but I got on medication and a year later I was fine.

It might take a while for the meds to kick in but I'm sure they will take care of your problem.

first of all if you have a negative attutide about counceling and meds nothing is going to work go in with a positive attutide that you want to get better and forget or talk about how your family made you feel when you were depressed and you needed them for support and they wernt there. no counceler is going to talk to you that way because its not in your head and its not your fault. you are going to have depression triggers like a death in the family, a loss of a job, etc and its going to stress you out again. just remember what you learn in counceling and apply that to each situation and you will learn how to deal with stress and depression better in the future

See your doctor to have your thyroid tested NOW. See what the results are from that test. Then decide how to proceed.

You have to shop around for the right doctor and it is also difficult to find the right medication. I've been on 4 so far and still trying.

well, depression is extremely serious. My parents recently seperated and are constantly fighitng over me. My girlfriend went off and had sex with another guy while I was looking the other way and I was very seriously addicted to cocaine and marijuana. My advice is push it. I started running a lot and when ever I want to give up I just push it! so whenever you feel like crap just remember to stay positive and know that your better than whatever makes you feel that way.
