Nope, a good soldier learns how to perform to the best of his abilities to carry out his orders , as required by any given situation that he finds himself in, at all times. This may include ignoring hunger if food is not available, but not necessarily so. There is always something you are able to eat in the local environment. It depends on how hungry you are.

Depending on your type and level of training you don't forget hunger you are taught how to deal with it. The same way we were trained to deal with (ignore) the cold, heat, certain levels of pain, lack of sleep. My son has always been amazed (at least it seemed to him!) at my ability to endure the cold weather, the 145 degree heat in Kuwait and the ability to stay awake for inordinate periods of time.
I simply explained that in most cases it was simply that they taught us the use for lack of a better term...mind tricks to allow us to do this. But now that I am over 50, the body doesn't buy the "it's not really cold" tick as well. His uncle was a 30 year special forces member and taught me a few things.

That is why they cut calorie intake & increase calories burned in all training boot camp, Officer Training School, & esp. Ranger & other special ops School. In war there is not time to always stop to eat & there can not be a distraction from protecting oneself & one's fellow troop. So yes, learn to ignore hunger.

Yeah, I'd rather go hungry than eat all those MRE's myself. But the people who are *really* oppressed and starving seem to like them fine. Let's put hunger into perspective please. Our soldier's never go without, but they routinely encounter people who do.

Food is energy and shouldn't be forgotten. Out in the field you can be using 5000 calories a day so it's very important to eat properly. Even if you have to eat your rations cold.

My husband always jokes that food and sleep are a crutch. I think in the right situation your body will adjust itself and you can ignore your hunger.
