The purpose of sexual reproduction is variation.
Asexual reproduction through "budding" or "division" produces another individual of identical genetic makeup, effectivly a younger clone.
A population of individuals made up of identical genetic information is very vulnerable to change and disease, since they all have identical systems.
When you have sexual reproduction you have more natural variation. For every "advantage" an organism has their is usually a "cost". If a plant is naturally pest resistant, the plant has to use resources to produce the toxin that discourages the bug.
Within a population of plants some will produce more toxin, and some will produce less. This variation increases the chance that if the enviroment changes that some of the offspring will survive.
If there is a heavy rainy season and many more insects are around, the plants with greater toxin levels may be the only ones to survive.
If there is a drought, and almost no insects are around, the plants that have not invested many resources in toxin production have used their resources towards growth and now may out compete their "brothers" for water and soil nutrients. The plants with low levels of toxins may be the only ones to survive.
If there was no variation all the plants would invest equally in toxin. All would be eually suseptable to insects etc.

Can you think of a better way? I can't.
All life evolves by "learning" to like the things that insure their continued existence. That's why you get hungry and eating is so pleasurable. It's also why we have pain.It teaches us that certain things are bad for us.
With the exception of single celled organisms, mating is the only thing that produces future generations. If it didn't feel so damn good we probably wouldn't be so inclined to "do it".
