Take one off the door and show it to him.... It is easy to remove and put it back. He will learn much more by actually seeing it, rather than just copying it from a website which his father/mother found for him.

google images ( http://images.google.com ) is an image search, and sometimes you can find things, for example "doorknob diagrams" I tried, but I didn't see anything immediately that might really be what you want. That website might help you find one, though. Also, Wikipedia.org, or Answers.com could help.

perhaps the local locksmith might have an instruction & template from an earlier instalation...
She / He would best explain how the gearing works as well as how the locking machanics work
