you can catch herpes simplex 1 by kissing thats just a big word for cold sore which is contagious but temporary and can be treated with over the counter remedies,and they can also be caught by casual contact such as sharing a drink. but genital herpes is contracted through unprotected sex and there is no cure and contrary to what most people belive it can indeed be spread even if there is no break out
