Well, when ever I visit the States I am always shocked by the size of the portions and the amount of sugar in everything. Even the bread tastes sweet and I cannot get over the amount on my plate every time I eat out.

Also it's impossible to walk anywhere - half the streets don't seem to have footpaths. I realise this is an exaggeration and I haven't seen everywhere, but I wanted to walk off my lunch and couldn't because there was nowhere to walk that wasn't full of cars.

So oversized portions and too little exercise - which doesn't mean going to the gym just getting out of your car occasionally.

America is Fast Food Nation: McDonalds, Burger King, Pizza Hut, Chinese Buffet. You can drive up to a McDonalds and get a greasy, double layered cheeseburger in 3 minutes--and it will only cost you 1 dollar. Soda also makes Americans fat. Americans don't drink water--they drink soda. And soda has like 1000 calories in 3 glasses.

We're fat because food is cheap, quick, and easy.

I've lost count of the number of times this question has been asked. It's not just Americans, the obesity figures across the globe are on the rise. It's really quite worrying. I think the fact that fast food is so readily available plays a big part, as well as people using food as a coping mechanism. HTH.

We live in a instant gratification society and are not willing to take the necessary steps to eat healthy, exercise and do the work it takes to get rid of excess weight. Lazy Americans.

Because America puts everything 24 hours so they can kill themselves anytime they want. It really is a sad site to see over 60% is overweight and obese. Thats really ridiculous.

TV and McDonalds....... seriously though. Everything has been simplified for us. Dish washers, clothes washers and dryers. Almost everyone drives instead of walks or rides bikes. Portion sizes have grown, and we've all discovered the flavor of food cooked in disgustingly fattening grease. So in short, we're lazier and we eat more.

Too many calories eaten, not enough calories burned.

I'd guess the sugar content of the american diet is the biggest single factor.

Because they eat too much? Ha Ha.

No the real answer is we have too much processed food with too high a fat content, we don't eat enough fruits and veggies. Few of us really get a balanced diet.

Well, Some people can't burn off their fat as easily as others. Other people are stressed out and turn to food to solve their problems. And others just dont get enough exercise
