I own a Canon MVX350i and am running Windows XP. I need Firewire to download video. What cable do I need? I believe it's just a firewire cable, but I have doubts that my Dell Dimension may need another part! I have downloaded all drivers, but I think the firewire is the only way to transfer the files from tape. Is this true?

FIREWIRE!!! Generally, the best way to connect computers to camcorders in firewire, like USB but with different cables, 4 times faster and it has its own little slot. But if you don't have a 1394 port you need to physically insert one, which you can buy for about twenty pounds. If it is a DV tape then go into a video editing program (e.g. windows movie maker) and scan the tape.

USB might work but according to staff at Curry's.Digital it isn't very good quality and is only really used for webcams!
Hope that's helped!

You may need a Firewire card which goes in the PCI slot for your Dell Dimension.

You also need a 4 pin to 6 pin Firewire cable.

What model is your Dell Dimension?

Firewire, if it's installed (and enabled) will be visible if you right-click Properties on the My Network icon (if it's installed on your desktop) or the Network item in the Start menu (if you're using the snazzy XP start menu).

It may not be called Firewire, but "IEEE 1394" something or other instead.

The alternative is to invest in a TV card that can also grab video using a regular linear composite cable.
