'There are no Atheists in foxholes'...but when I asked a war veteran about that he got angry and said 'Don't talk about things which you do not know, there are plenty of Atheists in foxholes. I was one of em. A mortar doesn't care what it hits no matter who's 'magical shield' is protecting you...'

I was very surprised b/c it was 3 years ago and I was only 12 at the time and he said tht so forcefully...why do people use that saying if it's so untrue?

Wow, what a story! And the veteran is right - we weren't there so we can't *really* know what it's like.

The saying "There are no Atheists in foxholes" is meant to illustrate the claim that people who say there is no god suddenly believe when their life is in immediate danger. The idea is a man huddled in a foxhole praying "Dear God, get me out of here" when just the day before he would say there is no god.

Not saying I agree or disagree... just my understanding of the expression.

I believe what he was trying to say was that when the S*** hits the fan the first words out of someone's mouth whether a Christian or not is.."Oh God". So even an atheist will acknowledge Him at that time.

The idea is to support the notion that when you are in serious trouble, you have no problem calling on God. Unfortunately you took this to literal and universal.

I've never heard it but I think that it would mean you have to be sure of your salvation to be willing to go in one.

Many christians don't respect soldiers who are not christian. It's their way. Just like Republicans don't respect democrat soldiers.
