We CAN move forward by remembering sure, But we then have to go a further step and forgive. Only after that can we move on.

The Jews HAVE gotten over the Holocaust. It stimulated them to say never again and to try their hardest to prove to the world that they could triumph. The Europeans imo never were hung up on the Inquisition so there's no comparison. But the reaction to slavery has not been that of the Jews to the holocaust.

MR JHK,
So you're the one who has taken the short straw and descended into personal abuse and threats. It just shows that you are too stupid to mount any kind of reasoned argument. You have been REPORTED for threatening behaviour.

I have read every response and I think some people have the right idea. Sure your ancestors were enslaved. Mine had their land taken away but do I constantly remind white people of this? NO. What I don't get is why younger generations are filled with this kind of hate. You didn't experience slavery first hand and many you don't even know your ancestors. I don't know mine but the point is I don't use my race as a crutch. That's what black people do. It's their ace up their sleeve. Somebody said why do Americans get over 9/11. Because it only happened 5 years ago! If many many generations from now still hate Muslims then they are doing the same thing black people do. The reason rape victims don't get over the violation of their bodies is because it happened to them. That doesn't make it alright for her great grandchildren to hold a grudge against that man who did or men in general. I'm not going to do that no offense thing and I have so many black friends. NO! To hell with that. I'm not racist and I do have a couple of black friends but this is the truth. Not all black people are this way but many are. I have some Hispanic blood in me as well but does it mean I care about illegal aliens. No. Send them back to where they came from for all I care. You don't have to forget about your past but you don't have to blame others when we had nothing to do with our ancestors and their ways.

seriously.. I don't understand why people don't get over something that has happened so long ago you can remember where you came from, remember what happened to your ancestors does not mean you can act like white people NOW are the ones who did it... not only that theres a whole month in called black history month, there are holidays for black people, they teach you about slavery in school, all of these are nationwide. What I think is a bigger problem are the INDIANS they are pretty close to being extinct because of what others have done and they got just the same and worse treatment then black people so STOP making the excuse that your ANCESTORS were slaves 100 of years ago therefor your allowed to act and do what you want . NOT ALL BLACK PEOPLE WERE EVEN SLAVES.......

Yes, it is true that we need to move forward. I don't know of any Americans that are holding black slaves today. (however, slavery does still exsist in the world)

To hold a grudge to this day against American Slavery is worse than Jews hating all Germans because of the Holocaust. No white American living today, has held slaves. Just as not all Germans are to be blamed for the Holocaust.

It is difficult to move forward, these ARE definitely things that need to be remembered. However, it is difficult to remember such terrible tragedies and do it without feeling something.

And these are just 2 examples of human atrocities that have occured. There are many, many more that have happened and are STILL happening in many cultures around the world. Slavery and genocide DO still exsist. Thankfully not in America, but it is a very large world.

Generalizing an answer for all black people is impossible. Some have and for those who haven't, there may be several different reasons. Otherwise I would say that it stems from their ancestors being treated like animals. The animosity that stems from something like gets passed down and won't necessarily fade away after a few generations especially when it wasn't very long ago when they had to ride in the back of the bus, use a separate bathrooms and ultimately get treated like second class trash. It can't be easy to recover from that.

Many blacks have moved past slavery and have prospered and made a decent life for themselves. However, the problem with some blacks getting over slavery is that many feel the harsh realities of discrimination today. It would be easier to just get over it if they weren't constantly reminded of it by receiving unequal treatment in many areas of life. It would be easier to get over it if there were not fools who still vandalize black property with KKK just because they move to the neighborhood. Many people are not strong enough to effectively cope with that level of hatred. The psychological damage is a harsh reality.

I guess we could ask this question in many flavors - why can't Jewish people get over the holocaust? Why can't the American Indians get over the fact that we kicked them off their land? Why can't the Kurds get over the massacre by the Sunnis?

Should we get over these atrocities?? If we 'get over' them, there is a chance that we will forget and let history repeat itself. We already have in places like Rwanda.

Until you've walked a mile in the shoes of the oppressed person you question, I think you should keep these questions under your hat.

The Jews "got over" the Holocaust because they were given Israel. They were given some sort of restitution. We have never given any of the families of these slaves any sort of restitution. How do you repay people for having kidnapped their ancestors and forced them into slavery??

Slavery is NOT used as a crutch so that people don't have to work. I notice that the people who are saying that have never been a minority race. It's amazing to me the generalizations people will make without ever knowing what it is to be that person.

ok lets go idiots! im black. ive been homeless numerous times. but i work. i take responsibility for my own shortcomings and i scar those who dare to come into my world and ruin it for me. think about how we re in slavery now. just on a more subtle level. i live in the ghetto where im picked on by cops becuz i have dreads and a wild look about myself but i am harmless. now why dont i get over slavery? i have forgiven. why are so many black fathers gone? brainwashing. remember when blacks were struggling to make a dime and if a man wanted his family to receive welfare to increase the chance of survival he had to leave the house? end thats only the beginning why are we killing each other? because we know if we kill a black person we re much more likely to get away with it. being the value placed on a black man s life compared to a white man s. outright slavery has ended. but the damages done to the mind of a black remains and so does the racism done on the sly. And that s why we re angry. its not that we hate white people. we just hate the white people who hate us enough to continue to show us the inferior treatment. and i dont use it as an excuse for my shortcomings. but i know that it is the source of alot of troubles although i aggressively try to work my way up the ladder so that i can bulletproof myself. this is coming from a 22 year old kid advancing in my IT career. i dont use slavery as an excuse for anything i fail to accomplish but i am knowledgeable and observant enough to see the lasting affects. im also mixed with "native american" so you can expect that i dont hap to well to being told what to do on MY land.

Could be because they still see racism affecting their lives, racism that stems from being treated less than others because their ancestors were slaves. It could be that they don't think they can get over it because they see whites waving Confederate flags that haven't gotten over it.

From you spelling of programme I wonder if you're British.

If so, consider this, why don't the folks that conduct the Orange Parade in Northern Ireland get over their victory?

It's easy to fault others when we haven't been in their shoes.

That being said, I think it is time to get over it, as well as all the other 100 year old problems that don't affect anyone living and we have provided opportunities for the affected to get over.

certain, there became White slavery. The British used the Irish as slaves up till the Nineteen Twenties contained in the coal mines in Britain (frequently toddlers). immediately there are modern-day day White slaves from jap Europe who're trafficked into brothels contained in the U. S. and Canada and Western Europe (including toddlers). contained in the previous, many indentured servants (presented to places like Georgia chained to boats) were Irish. 95% of them died in slavery. you'd be intending to do your own analyze. Use your textbook, valid web pages, a library e book, and ask your librarian for any previous documents they'd have. you could also e-mail a international kin professor (for ex: google in "Purdue college" then click "international kin" and locate the professor's e-mail) about modern-day day slavery. you could research and evaluation what you locate, and be particular you cite your elements and do a bibliography on the right. also, see in case you'll locate any DVDs from PBS or the heritage Channel. ultimately, "orphan" British toddlers after WWI and WWII were despatched to Australia as "kinfolk servants"

Why should they?

The real question is how to remember the past in a positive way so History doesn't repeat itself.

To paraphrase a Holocaust quote:

Only those that died in Slavery have a right to Forgive;
And those who live in Freedom must never Forget, lest History repeat itself.
