Physical conditioning.

The one, single, best thing you can do for yourself, once you have firmly decided you must sign up, is to build your physical strength and endurance.

They certainly will do that FOR you, but at a great cost to you. Get yourself to the point where you can do those long runs, marches, climbs, crawls, etc WITHOUT a screaming noncom in your face, the less they will have to do it.

You'll get plenty of that, anyway. It's the nature of basic training, But most of their efforts and vitriol will be directed at the slow performers, the laggards, the whiners. If you finish the march early, you may get to sit and relax until everyone else comes in.

If you are the last one in, you get no rest at all.

Ok I see there are plenty of people that assume you shouldn't join because you might have to go to war. Yes that is a possibility, but I have served for 20 years and have yet to go to a combat zone, so its not a given that you will.

As far as tips for basic training goes, the best advice I can give is learn all you can. The information you are taught in basic training is the foundation upon which you will build the skills necessary to deal with all of the issues you will face in your service time.

A lot of basic training is what we call "head" games. This is a vital part of the training. If you can't fold some clothes or do a few push ups when someone is yelling at you, calling you a worthless piece of dog sh.it, then how are you going to be able to keep your self alive in a combat situation.

Military is not for everyone as evident by most of the responses you got here, but it can be a very rewarding and personally satisfying career choice.

In training watch out for drill Sergeant that love to yell just to yell. Watch out for short sheeting even from a women's barracks make sure you have a watch. (Hubby didn't have one and had to buy one while in training he went in for cavscout) don't get hooked in the credit card allowed because you are in the service. Credit card company do military people like they deal with college students. Save your money wisely in the military. Retirement doesn't pay well. If they make promises to you in the recruiter’s office, GET IT IN WRITING. Hubby was told because of his college credits he would go in under one thing and they lied. Make sure you are strong enough to handle cursing and ridicule and if you need glasses get it done before going because the military issue glasses look ugly. Try different ways to put your hair up or cut very short. If your married there is more to know. I am an air force brat of a 20-year air force father I married a guy who joined the army. So I have seen both sides. Check out air force too. Check out what career areas they have in each branch. Its not just air force verses army is what area of that branch would you be best at. Especially look at areas that you would enjoy doing in the military. I have cousin who is a military dental assistant. Her hubby was a special type office personal. When you finish training if you have any dental needed get it done early in your military career. Outside of your military life try getting into a squadron sports team, even bowling. The rec centers are a great place to hang. Don’t get caught up in the drinking parties they can end a career. Take advantage of overseas posts they can be educational and great fun. i lived in Germany and England. If you are religious you can talk to great base Chaplin’s they can hook you up with your denominational church. Even wiccans have rights to do theirs as well. Now he is a Christian, hubby was one during the army; he had to get out because he got injured.

GOOD LUCK AND GOD BLESS YOU AND GIVE YOU STRENGHT.

Dear, I wish you well. Military Service can be a very honorable career. Just make sure that is what you want. Do not be afraid to ask your Recruiter any questions you may have. Be yourself and you may do just fine. I thank you way ahead of time for your service. From A Vietnam Veteran
