Mass production, and low expectation of flavor. I'm with you on this one.

Its not only a generalized concept of "quality" because when Americans take the time with beer (Sam Adams) or with cars (Cadillac) they have good success.

Two points actually contaminate the beer scene, the first is the way its made. Most US brewing companies make it fast with a ton of chemical additives as well as white sugar to speed fermentation, alter taste and so forth. Many of the import breweries have been brewing slower, using only the natural sugars in the ingredients and without chemicals.

Some of the finest beers on Earth were coming from places like Czechoslovakia where the backward communist system made it hard for breweries to use more modern (and artificial methods.) Likewise Mexico, the more traditional (and slower methods,)produces better and more genuine beer - and cuts down profits. (Like the US, Canada has always produced sugar and chemical swill, its just stronger and has more body.)

The second point was made that its what Americans are used to and what they buy. Like Homer Simpson, they like their "Duff" and nothing is going to change that!

But you Americans can cheer up! The quality of world beer is reaching a parity little by little. No, your beer is NOT getting any better, but brewers from Mexico to the Czech Republic, from Poland to England are all discovering the vast sums of money to be made in instantly produced chemical and sugar "swill" laced with preservatives. The quality or beer around the world is dropping like a stone!

Americans do brew the best beers in the world. If you compare Bud Miller or Coors then American beer ranks low.Try a real true American beer Stone,Sierra Nevada,Lost Coast,Firestone the list goes on .American beer is some of the best in the world. The micro-brewers in America brew every style of beer you can think of.Next time you go for a beer don't reach for something a million dollar ad campaign says is good beer. And California brews the best beers on the planet

Note: Don J's answer is beautiful. I can't improve on that. I can only add that Germany in particular has the German Purity Law of 1516 states that beer can only be brewed with barley, hops and water. It's pure, clean, and they still manage to come up with countless delicous flavors from those three ingredients. There's no crap put in to speed up the process or anything.

Hey American beer is in the same category as American cars!

-12-pack of Budweiser or Heineken?
-Ford Taurus or Honda Accord?

Come on those are both easy questions!!! IMPORT all the way!!!

America lives by quantity over quality any day of the week. It's sad... but true;-)

Why are so many of you beer snobs? Jeez, you don't have to be bitter just because the weather sucks in the UK and you have to drink beer as heavy as oil to stay warm.

And Don, you are paranoid. Outside of using rice, I'm pretty sure all the major brewers just stick to hops, water, yeast, and grain.

Why is democracy so difficult for some people to understand ? The reason that American beer tastes the way it does is because that's how Americans like it. That's the answer.

Try drinking something more than the mass-produced beers you find in the discount section of the supermarkets. For a few dollars more, you can get beers better than anywhere else on earth.

You are generalizing. A nice Sam Adams Summer or Oktoberfest? BJ's Porter? I'd much rather have one of those over a Corona, Molson's, or Heineken.
