I am a dramatic coloratura, which according to a lot of thing I have read is a pretty rare voice type. I am also a fiction writer. I love both, but where they both are quite competative opera seems to be the one that I could more easily get into. ( I think there are many more aspiriting writers then opera singers, and on top of that, much less dramatic coloraturas)

I am not going to choose, I plan to do both. I am 23 right now and am just finishing up my school work. My vocal teacher is very insistant I could be extreamly sucessful in the world of opera.

Does anyone know what a sucessful opera singer makes in salary?

Instead of doing competitions, if you have are a dramatic coloratura you have an edge on the market because yours is a rare voice type. Try getting involved with a young artist program like Merola in San Francisco.

You can make Good Money singing Opera. Depending on the agent you choose. When your Voice teacher tells you that you are ready to start making career, you will need to find a good agent, many opera houses in these days work directly with the agents.

You could do now Opera competitions, like Placido Domingo's "OPERALIA" Metropolitan's Opera House Council "Opera Auditions". Licia Albenese's "Puccini Foundation" You can find competitions in any country in America Europe... every where! Competitions are good for more than one reason.

1. Experience
2. Start Meeting people and creating a network
3. Meet other Teachers, Singers, Coaches and agents.
4. Receive Money and maybe some scholarship

Other thing you can do and will help you a lot is to participate in Master Classes and Opera Summer Camps. Good to make contacts.

Good luck in your career!

It depends on what shows you choose. It's not just being a great opera singer, it's choosing the right show that will go the furthest. Maybe you can write a story someday and find someone to help you write music and together you can write an amazing opera and perform in it!! Then you would be doing both things that you love and making tons of money! :-)
