I've heard that in Canada milk is bought by the bag. Is this true? If so why?

You can buy milk in bags. You typically get 3 bags, totally 4L of milk. I think it's just a way to make buying larger amounts of milk easier. There are special containers you can get to put the bags into and pour the milk directly from the bag.

You can also buy milk in 1L & 2L cartons, or 250 mL (1 cup) 500mL (2 cups) cartons.

They are sold in gallon plastic containers in some convenience stores, but not typically in the grocery stores, atleast not in my area in southwestern Ontario.

we used to always buy milk "by the bag". They were approx. 1litre bags... but we were on a milk delivery system, along with alot of other people. Leave the money, the milk comes like... every week i think(it was a long time ago). But then i guess the company who did it stopped, or it became less cost effective to do milk "by the bag". We started buying from Beatrice(Canadian dairy product distributor) in stores- where milk comes in cartons(cardboard-ish) or large 4 Litre jugs(plastic). That is the story of milk. You don't have to buy bags- it's simply an option, one that isn't used by too many people anymore.

I think it is in a bag, but also inside a box. I remember seeing it last time we went up to the falls. We took a detour and got lost, ended up at some gas station where we thought gas was $0.53/gallon. LOL it was .53 a liter. LOL
