Shelf stable for soooo long? I'm talking about MRE's. I have about 20 cases in my Garage, and other than the mention of a "Sopacko packing company", there is not a mention of where they are processed or manufactured. Are they just vaccum sealed meals the government has purchased from various commercial distributors? Or, something more sinister?

I actually saw a mini-documentary on one of the science channels that showed them being made. It was some sanitary-looking factory, with grannies in hair nets and disposable gloves, slicing and dicing and baking, with all these huge conveyor belts going everywhere. I forget where it was, though, or the name of the company. I think they manufacture some brand-name food, too. Like Sara Lee or something. That's not the company, but you get my drift. They use special chemical additives to prolong the shelf life. I would have paid more attention had I known you were going to ask... :)

Hey, young soldiers tell me MRE's are much better then the Rations, by memory K-rations we had in the 60's.

I actually liked SOS (S**t on a shingle) which is what we called the ones which had a gravy/meat mixture and a slice of toasted bread in them. If the battery cook ran out of money near the end of the month, he'd drag out the Rations, and as I said, I really liked SOS which was merely the gravy/mixture spread over the toast. I was the only one I knew who did.

Usually, MRE's and that sort of thing are put up for bids by the government procurement system. The contract states content and quality, and there are inspectors to make sure they meet standards. Sometimes, it is small companies which get the contract, and yes, they use local help, maybe grannies or even, heh, heh, illegals.

I've ate KRations and MRE's both. MRE's are much better than KRations. MRE's are made in Cincinnati, OH. I live close by and ran into a couple of guys at a near by bar to the plant and they agreed with me at the blandness of them. We had a good laugh comparing are least favorites. They are totally disgusting. I absolutely hate the vegetable bean burrito.UUUGGGHHH!!! It's like paste.

What could be sinister about nasty food? It is better than it used to be though. Great during hurricane season - we wait for one as I type & I know there is food in closet that does not need electricity. Eaten it before & no strange change over me - I am still strange but intelligent. LOL

MRE = "Meal, Ready to Eat." Three lies for the price of one.

They are vacuum sealed, and have a huge amount of preservatives in them.
