My cat is 11 years old, but I have only had her since May 2006.She has lost alot of weight and people in my building say that she might have worms, but they haven't seen her yet. I don't really want to put her down but if she might be a dieabet cat. I don't want to see her go through what my first cat went through. She is doing alot of the things my first cat did.(not eating, drinking a little but not going to the bathroom as much and always crying and when she asks for food she doesn't eat it and she spends most of her time in my sink in my bathroom.) Please help me if you can. The vets told me if she doesn't eat or go to the bathroom tonight that I will have to take her in tomorrow. (Thursday, August 31, 2006)

My cat had kidney failure. He got dehydrated really easily and when this happens to cats, they will not eat. I gave him at-home fluid injections every other day, and they helped a little, but after 6 months of him losing weight, I finally looked at him one day and saw that there was no life in his eyes anymore. He was still alive, but it was like his body was shutting down. I had a long talk with him that night and the next morning, even though it broke my heart to do it, I took him to the vet to have him put to sleep. He was my baby for 11 years and no other cat will ever take his place. Mom says it was probably just my concience, but I had a dream that night of him. In it he was alive and healthy like a kitten again. He actually talked to me and told me that it was okay to let him go. He said it was time. I miss him terribly. It's been 9 months since it happened and it still hurts. I have all my favorite pictures of him on my dresser so that I can look at him still. Look in your heart and you will know what the right thing to do is.
If there is a way you can make your baby better, do it. Don't give up until it is the only thing left for you to do.
DO NOT PUSH IT OFF ONTO SOMEONE ELSE IF YOU DECIDE TO HAVE HER PUT DOWN. As painful as it may be, you will regret not having those last moments with her. Think about it... If you were dying, and your mother were able to be there, wouldn't you want her there?

Before you have her put down be sure there is nothing the vet can do for her. If there isn't anything that can be done, then you have to say the hardest words a pet owner can say to a vet. When my old cat (age 23-He was born at my house so I know his age was right) got down, I spent over $1000 trying to get him better but it was really just his age. I realized I was being cruel to him by being selfish-I didn't want to let go of him. Finally I just moved the IV lines and picked him up, told him how much I loved him and said that it was OK for him to go to the Rainbow Bridge before me. I told him his mother & sisters were waiting for him and that I would be with them when my time came. He actually raised his precious head & looked at me and took a breath & then was gone. The vet didn't even have to give him the injection. A Heaven Without Animals Cannot A Heaven Be. My thoughts & prayers go out to you and your precious "furbaby". Look up the poem Rainbow Bridge-it really helps you get through time like this. They all leave pawprints on our hearts.

You could have her tested for diabetes, worms or anything else you may think it could be, but it could get costly. It depends on how much you are willing to spend on your pet. You might be doing her a favor by just putting her down and put her out of her misery if it is something on going. The vet usually knows best, I would probably go with his/her advice.
there is no easy way to go through something like this, but just think how much better off the cat will be if she is suffering now. and in the end you will know you did the right thing by putting her out of that misery.

You should have already taken her in. If she has worms then that can be taken care of pretty easily. It may be something very simple but if you keep waiting it could turn serious or even death. Having an animal put to sleep is the last resort. Most vets will try to save an animal first. However, if nothing can be done to help your kitty, then you have to understand the pain she may be in and the humane thing to do is to let her go. Take her to a vet NOW!! Don't wait until its to late to help her.

When you take her in kiss her and maybe write a note to bury with her saying you love her. It is hard. MAybe right after you drop her off, go to the pet store and get a new cat!! That could work. There is no easy way. Just cry as much as you need. Maybe you can ask the vet to make sure he HAS to put her down. I feel sorry for you.

There really isn't an easy way to put a pet down but what's always helped me was knowing that it was the right thing to do. If your cat is really that sick then putting her down will be the kindest thing to do, so she doesn't have to suffer (which it sounds like she's doing). I'm really sorry about her and I hope the vets can find something to make her better.

first off what does she have?
she might be just old and ready to go. (animals dont do well cooped up in an apartment)
the best thing for both of you is to have her put down if the vet can do nothing for her
go to the vet and have the vet give her the shot and sit and hold her and cry while she slips silently and painlessly away. this is the most humane for both of you(i m crying already)
good luck and from one cat lover to another, i am truly sorry

Life isn't easy but life with pets is rewarding. However, there comes a time when delaying the inevitable prolongs the agony for both of you. I've had regrets over letting some of my pets die on their own when it would have been much kinder to put them down. That's my advice especially if you have taken her to the vet and they don't know what to do.

Wait and see what the vet says...11 is not all that old for a cat. Worms and diabetes are treatable. Don't go jumping to the conclusion that you are going to have to put her down. Treat her for whaterver is wrong with her.

I'm so sorry to hear about your cat.
There is no easy way to put a pet down. If the vet can do nothing to help, though, then you're right about wanting to spare her pain.
If it comes to that, then know that you gave her a good place to live the end of her life, and that you loved her.
