I'd go to college on the GI bill after my enlistment, and as an officer I don't want to get people killed because of my incompetency. Also, I just can't bear it, I'm just BURNING to be a Marine, much moreso than college.

All I can think of is that the most popular and competent 1LT I ever knew had made it all the way to E-5 before he decided on a commission. Because he had "been there, done that" the guys treated him as still one of the guys, but also gave him the due respect an officer is SUPPOSED to have. When he would say how he knew it was a SH__T job but it had to be done, we didn't seem to mind doing it as much cause we knew he really did know.

I asked myself this EXACT same question. So I would consider going to college while in the reserves. There are some pros and cons to this, but I think it is a good idea. Also, if you arent sure you want a career in it or not..it would be good to check it out in the reserves, rather than going actvie duty and being stuck for 4 years. In the reserves you can still live your (almost) normal life.

You'll be much happier if you go for your commission. Play soldier for a few years in ROTC to take off the edge of waiting. It'll be better for you and your family in the long run.
