Maybe she should wash her face more often. Or better yet take her to a doctor.

Mucus in the eyes or eye boogers are nature's way of cleaning out the eye if tears aren't enough. They can be a sign of infection of allergies depending on the frequency and the symptoms that come with it. If the drainage is yellow, most likely it is a form of infection. If it is clear or beige with crusting it could be allergies. The cause of the drainage determines the way to treat it. Here are some suggestions:

If the drainage is accompanied w/pink or red eye lids, on one or both eyes, then she most likely needs to see a doctor and get antibiotics.

If the drainage is more like a clear crust that is sticky, it is possible that she is allergic to something that she is sleeping near. I might suggest getting a new nonallergenic pillow.

No matter what the cause, clean the eyes with a clean cloth. Consider the matter that you remove infectious and don't use the cloth again on someone else. It may be able to spread by touch.

If the whites of her eyes are red too, then again it could indicate infection or allergies. If the problem doesn't resolve by changing the pillow that she sleeps on or things that regularly touch her face, then you really need to see the doctor.

Lean more towards infection if the symptoms recently occurred and appear to be getting worse. Lean more towards allergies if the symptoms are worse on certain days and have occurred several times over a period of time. Don't use eye drops unless the doctor says so. Particularly if she is a child. You want to help the problem not make it worse. Good luck.

It is normal to have some small amount of "eye boogers". Our eyes have natural ways of keeping themselves clean and getting rid of the dirt that gets in there.

If the eye is red, bloodshot or painful, she needs to see a doctor for treatment, because that would indicate an infection.

If not, it may be from eye makeup or some irritant that is getting into her eyes. If it bothers her, she could try not wearing eye makeup and see if it goes away.

It's called an eye infection. Might not hurt (yet) but definitely a bad sign. Go to a doctor.
