Going coach on amtrak will not be more expensive than flying, unless you got a fantastic deal on a flight (it could happen) ... but it certainly will be a heck of a lot longer ... I happen to love the train though.

Go to the Amtrak website, http://www.amtrak.com , and click on schedule, then fill it out.
Use "LAX" for Los Angeles, and since you did not say where in Ohio, I used Cleveland "CLE".

I found two routes you could take .... here they are summarized:

1) from LA, to Chicago, to Cleveland, nearly 49 hours riding time, for $184.

2) from LA, to Klamath Falls, OR, to Pasco, WA, to Chicago, to Cleveland .... at nearly 80 hours on the train, I think you would want to avoid this one!! It' is $227

You can book online from their website, or by phone, or by going to a travel agency, or the train depot itself.

There is really only one way. On Amtrak. You can either call them direct or book on www.amtrak.com

Seems like a very long train ride. And it will be more expensive then flying most likley. Not sure why you would want to do that unless it is stricly to see a part of the country you want to see.
