Required CPR?

Question

I personaly believe that a CPR card should be required to get a drivers license and to graduate from high school. I think this only because many people don't know CPR and there should be some incentive to take a CPR class. What do you think?

Additionaly I think it would be a good idea for CPR recertifications to be mandatory, and required for renewal of your license.

The government doesn't ask us for much, however, we ask the government for a lot. A CPR class is not a big deal, but I know from first hand experience that CPR can save someone.

i think it's a really good idea, and that it would save lives. throw in the fact that refresher courses should be taken, as if you don't use it, you lose it. i've taken refresher courses in the past, and was always amazed at what i'd forgotten, as thankfully i've never had the opportunity to have to use cpr.

I don't think that people would be thrilled for the government to require anything more than they already do. However every person should know CPR & basic first aid. Especially if you have children or family/friends with special medical needs. Unfortunately the above person is correct in that a lot of people are afraid to help. In most states there is a Good Samaratin Law that covers people using CPR and first aid if they work with the skills they have been certitfied in. On a side note: if anyone is interested in CPR and other aspects of emergency medical services, contact your local ambulance services, they always need help, most in the country except for large cities are volunteer.

I see where you'r coming from and it's an excellent idea. As far as requireing a CPR card to get a drivers lic I say no,because people whom can't phy do CPR wouldn't be able to drive then. However,all schools should have CPR and AED training required to graduate. I'm a long time EMS provider. I vol for a rual ambulance, and I work for a private ambulance co . There are schools in my area who offer free CPR (during school hours) to all 12th grade students..(100% partake)

Believe me...CPR can and does work....I have had many code saves . It's a great feeling for the person preforming it...the family of the victom...and by all means the victom of a heart attack

I'm one of those "snotty" CPR instructors (AHA- Healthcare Provider) who believes it should not be mandatory. Yes, I think it is of great benefit to learn, but the fact is, as one other mentioned, if you don't use it, you lose it. Given all the healthcare providers I recert, most of them don't know or remember diddly, nor do they care to except to maintain their jobs.
Someone else mentioned the fact that there are many who are reluctant to help, including those who may be well-trained. As a medic, even you may choose to not assist if you are off-duty. So, the CPR cert is nice, but I don't believe it will necessarily increase the likelihood that those trained will act. Training may be empowering, but it doesn't change the inclination of the person; and again, people tend to lose their skills very soon after training, even those who have been re-certifying for years.

I don't think a CPR card should be required to get a driver's liscense. I do think it's a good thing for people to know.

Unfortunately, between lawsuits that seem to crop up at the drop of a hat and these nutcases that run HMOs, I don't see that happening much either.

Currently 54% of the folks trained in 1st Aid and CPR won't give aid. Most folks are afraid that they will matters worse. It might have something to do with over bearing and snobby CPR instructors.

If you require people to take the course, that does not mean they will actually do CPR if someone needs it.
