My Budgie Alfie has escaped outside. He has more strength because he has been able to fly around the house. When he escaped - he has stayed high in the trees and when flying stays very High. He was always at the top of 100 Year Old VERY Tall trees. It might have been easier to entice him back if he was at a lower level. But if he had his Wings clipped he would be more accessable to Cats or other animals. And Cats don t usually kill them- but would injure them by batting them around and I would fear much more suffering in this kind of death. Is there anyway of clipping them - but just a bit - so that they would have more flight Control and be able to stay High enough off the ground and in trees but Not So High?!

p.s. I do not Plan on letting them out on Purpose-its just in case. I just Lost one of mine-even with being as careful as I thought possible. (See History under my listings) You can never be careful enough. I now will put the one I have left in its cage when I leave thru the door -until I have a second protective enclosure. In this case it happened at the cottage and we will be buying the large Iron mostquito netted enclosure to put right up against the outside of the sliding glass door. In the city they would have to get thru 2 doors and the 3rd is the outside door.

I guess that means Alfie has not came back in yet. Humm...
I have a Conure and a Tiel. You can clip 5 feathers back to the tips of the next layer of feathers on the conure and he can fludder to the ground and not hit too hard but I clip 7 to make sure he don't get away. If you clip the Tiel the same way 5 feathers he will fly strait but don't seem to have any lift.
So you may be able to experment a little.
I myself do not want my birds to fly but enough to save themselfs if they fall. When I take them outside I am with them and they can stay on my sholder or they can get on a perch. I at times will put one of them in the larger of the two travle cages and just hang it from the eve of the house so to block the sun. I leave them out there with food and water they both seem to like it for a while. I just let them set on my sholder when watering the plants. But I have no plans to leave them outside unproecteted. They are both happy as can be and can't fly.
But it is up to you if you want them to fly or not. If you are there with them they should not have any problems with cats and the like so no need to fly.

I raised and had parakeets for years. I never clipped their wings. Everyone in the house made sure that the birds were safe and in the cages before turning on fans, opening doors, and made sure the cats weren't around when the birds were out flying in the house. All birds and animals need security and someone around them when not in cages or being watched. Even if the wings were clipped it is never safe to turn your bird loose to be in your back yard tree. Many plants are toxic to birds, and outside you have no control of what is going on with them.

what you want to do is take a towl...hold him away from you in and upright position and hold his on the opposite side of the wing your clipping. Spread the wing out and count out 5-7 of the longest outside feathers. Carefully with a good sharp pair of scissors... clip close to the secondary set of feathers but never into them. click here for picture.

But if your not comfortable with doing this i suggest calling around local petstore to see if they clip wings. If not go to your vet. It shouldnt cost much at all. Talk to your bird the whole time to keep him calm and.

Just be careful when clipping birds wings/tail feathers.They all have a "blood feather" and if you clip it wrong..the birdies can bleed profusely and even die.
