It means that you shouldn't start accusing other people of something if you're guilty of something yourself.
In other words watch what you say unless you want to be pointed out as having done something wrong yourself. Or "those who are vulnerable should not attack others".
Basically it's a warning not to be hypocritical.
The phrase can be traced back to Geoffrey Chaucer's 'Troilus and Criseyde' (1385). George Herbert wrote in 1651: 'Whose house is of glass, must not throw stones at another.' This saying is first cited in the United States in 'William & Mary College Quarterly' (1710). Twenty-six later Benjamin Franklin wrote, 'Don't throw stones at your neighbors', if your own windows are glass.' 'To live in a glass house' is used as a figure of speech referring to vulnerability."

it's the same as the saying " let he who is without sin cast the first stone"
basically, if you live in a glass house ( i.e. you are guilty of something too) then throwing stones ( accusations) will cause you to break your own house.

I think it means that if you know that you are vulnerable in some aspect, you shouldt get others attention to it: for example, if I know im not too clever, but at the same time keep calling people stupid, sooner or later somebody will make me bite the dust, whereas if I keep quiet, I will get away with it.
