well XXXX would equal 40, which would actually be XL

so the answer would be XLI

The normal Roman Numeral for 40 these days is XL, not XXXX.

So it would be XLI. But if you insist upon using XXXX as 40 (and it wouldn't be outside the bounds of possibility) then the next number would be XXXXI, amazingly enough.

There is no XXXX, but we'll presume you mean 40.
