This answer applies to Great Britain. The term 'chemist' is a more general term which is used to describe anyone who has a background or training in chemistry. The term 'pharmacist' is legally restricted to those who are registered with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain. The currently accepted way to address a chemist is as a pharmacist and a chemist's shop as a pharmacy. Every pharmacist has to undertake a degree in Pharmacy (takes 5 years) then has to register as a 'Pharmaceutical Chemist' with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (RPSGB). Only those who are registered with this Society are allowed to call themselves pharmacists (or dispensing chemists). It used to be custom to call them Chemists and Chemist shops and, as with so many things, changing the custom to Pharmacists and Pharmacies takes time!

Do you mean a chemist and a pharmacist? Yes; a huge difference. Though both professions have similar training in the core sciences and chemistry classes. The training radically diverges for the pharmacist who gets intensive biological and medical classes.
