Contrary to what Ich said: Typhoons are cyclones in the Western Pacific -- in the Eastern Pacific they ARE called hurricanes.

And though extremely rare, they do hit southern California usually as minimal hurricanes or tropical storms usually after passing up the Gulf of California (east of Baja California).

Some examples of tropical storms/hurricanes were Ignacio in 1997 and the edges of Hurricane Linda also in 1997. In September 1939 a tropical storm/minimal hurricane hit the Santa Barbara area killing 45 people and doing millions of dollars of damage.

Been here in San DIego for 30 yrs and have yet to see a hurricane. Alittle wind and rain and once the waves did take out a small bridge in Carlsbad and wash out the road but it runs right next to the beach and it was level with the beach. and in San Diego some restaurants had windows smashed by some high waves during a rain storm. Neither were any where near a hurricane tho.

In extremely rare cases, there may be reminants of a hurricane or tropical storm that affects California.

In general, though, the answer is No becuse the waters off the coast of CA are too cold to sustain a tropical natured system.

No. In the far south at the Mexican boarder they've heard of them, but up north the ocean is so cold we don't even get decent thunder storms.

Maybe if Global Warming keeps coming there will be a time when hurricanes will be spawned off Hawaii and will destroy the Golden Gate Bridge. Just like a B movie!

No. First of all, tropical storms that reach hurricane strength in the Pacific are called typhoons. Secondly, California is out of the range of typhoons.

I lived in California til I was 18 and it's just as Victor said. You definitely have to go to San Francisco though. That place is friggin' cold. :) I kinda wish we didn't have earthquakes though and I do remember the time we had a small tornado rare as it was...
