PDF is a file format create by Adobe that can be used by virtually all operating systems provided the user has the Adobe Acrobat Reader. In other words, if you're a Windows user, you could send a PDF file to a Mac user and they would be able to read the file with their version of Adobe Reader. This format makes it very popular for online manuals and forms.

Adobe provides the reader software for free, but they do charge for the software that creates PDF files. They do have a website where you can create some files for free. There are other free PDF file conversion programs.

To view/read pdf (portable document file) files, you must have a reader. The universal viewer for these types of files is Acrobat Reader (now Adobe Reader).

If you don't have one installed, you can download one for free of use at this link http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

If you want to create PDF files from files like Excel, Word, Text files, then you would need a PDF converter or the Adobe Acrobat Professional which is found here http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobatpro/

PDF is Post Document Format. The reader is free (Adobe Acrobat Reader, current version is 7).
The creator/printer costs money. Adobe has its Adobe Acrobat for creation. You can download a trial version software like WinPDF (http://www.pdfdesk.com/winpdf.html)

This program lets you install a virtual printer by the same name - WinPDF. And when you have to convert a document into *.pdf, simply hit Print button and select the WinPDF printer.

Good luck.
