If your vet believes the cat will recover, trust that.

We are currently caring for a cat that got sucked up into a truck engine and chewed up. It's spine was wrenched and its leg was broken. Luckily, we have a reasonable and responsible vet who told us how to care for the cat's injuries, and only charged us for the antibiotics the cat needed. Not all vets are "in it for the money".

For pelvic surgery the cost might be about $500, but depending on the severity of the damage, the cat may recover just as well without the surgery. Discuss ALL options with your vet.

Keep in mind that you may have to keep the cat immobile for about a month (confining it to a large crate until it's strong enough to move around normally.)

The cat should do fine after he's taken care of at the vet. My parents had a cat that we euthanized a year ago. She was hit by a car when she was 1 years old and survived, but fractured her pelvis. We isolated her from the other cats (this was like 5 or so years ago... my parents couldn't afford to give the cat surgery). Anyways, I fed her through a syringe for a few months and gave her attention, etc. She healed up just fine, although she couldn't jump onto high places anymore. She was euthanized when she was age 6-7 because she developed diabetes and was deathly ill, not because of the injury she received when she was younger.

Cats have the ability to mend bones like people. The chances of survival at that age are much better than an older cat. The important thing is to get a cast placed on the lower part of the cat if it is serious enough. This can be done and it will allow the cat movement, but at a minimum. However if it a small fracture, and does not pose a threat at getting worst, then time will heal it. I recommend a cast as it gives a better chance of success. I have seen many animals with fractured bones, and have had a rather high success at treating them. Talk to your Vet and get them to take an X-ray to assure the opportunity of success.

Will they do surgery on the pelvis? He might not have 100% mobility when it's done and he should do well I think. He definitely has youth on his side.

I honesty don't think that vets are there to rip people off. Some places might have a less expensive surgery or something. Every profession has its bad apples of course. Most vets do care about the animals they treat. You might go for a second opinion if you feel suspicious about it.

Sorry can't help you further as I have never had a cat injured like that. I do hope your young guy does fine and his high-jump days may be over. He will still be a fine cat.

Cat Broken Pelvis

Most animals with a fractured pelvis do very well. Since the cat is so young, it has an even better chance. Just take good care of it. There is no way to repair a fractured pelvis. It just has to heal on its own.

Depending upon how many fractures there are in the pelvis there is a great chance it can heal on it's own. It has been standard procedure in the vet world to allow cats and small dogs with pelvic fracture to heal without surgery. Now a days they want you to go to an orthopedic or let your own vet go in there with plates, pins, etc. This is a very evasive surgery and it quite costly. Ask your vet about it healing on it's own. Like I said it depends on how many fractures and how bad they are.

if money is no object and you dont mind having your cat --repaired-- so to speak, then do it

you love your cat and you should be willing to do anything for a member of your family and yes the vet would have told you that putting it down would be the most humane thing, but your vet is right and if the fracture is not life threatening, then take care of your kitty and bring it home.

if you cannot afford the vet bill, ask you vet if there is a website that you can go to, to get help with the bill.

there used to be a website a few years ago but i do not remember the name. maybe some other cat lover out there will remember the name and be able to help with that one.

Would you like to be put down because of a broken pelvis? He will survive if you let the vet do what they went to school to do. I suggest getting some pet insurance. If you can't afford high vet bills, see if they might let you help out as a volunteer to pay it off.
