Minor point- all real root beer is non-caffinated.

Diet soft drinks are a bad idea for dieters for several reasons:

1. The carbolic acids eat away at calcium, something your body needs. one soda can neutralize several days worth of calcium intake.

2. The chemicals in the body are never a good idea. Your body can metabloize sugar. It is not quite sure what to do with the chemicals. Some get passed right through, some change states, some get caught in certain kinds of cells, etc.

3. (I think this is the issue you are talking about) Too many dieters do the 'jumbo burger and fries... and a diet cola please' bit- they think they are saving calories in one place, so eat more in another place. Studies show that diet soda drinkers tend to eat more calories in their meals than they would if they did not use diet sodas.

4. Some studies show that even if you eat a balanced diet and drink diet soft drinks, you will still gain more weight. The theory for this is that if you body THINKS something is high calorie, it acts like it is. No one seems sure how or why this works but it does indded seem to be happeneing in studies. Sugar substitutes MAY make the body respond in a way that either searches for sugars, or reduces metabolism, or something.

Bottom line? It's not nice to fool Mother Nature!

I read Atkins, aspertame (the sweetener in most diet sodas) raise blood-sugar levels higher than sugar. I don't know of the overall impact of this, though.

Diet Rite, and probably some other soda manufacturers by now, make sodas with splenda, and acesulfame-K, both of which don't raise your blood sugar. So, if anybody tries to say they're worse, I'd challenge them.

most diet soda's do not have any Calories, so it can not make you fat.

The sugar used in soda is a highly refined sugar. It is horrible for your health.

Although there are a lot of rumors that don't seem to want to go away, the 'fake sweeteners" that are used now have never been shown to cause any health problems.

Diet soda's are made with artificial sweeteners and are worse for your body than regular soda. However, soda in general is bad for your body, it makes it harder for your body to lose weight.
