Neither... This whole homeless thing is getting WAAAAAY out of hand. There is no reason ANYONE should be homeless in the United States. Think about this: if you were homeless because you couldn't afford a place to live/food/etc., wouldn't you try to form some partnerships with others in similar circumstances? 3 or 4 people working at McDonald's or whatever other low paying job they could find(there are plenty of them out there)would surely be able to afford housing of some sort. Living with a few strangers has to be better than living under a bridge. One more thing: if you are able enough to stand at a freeway exit and beg all day, you are certainly able enough to earn a wage SOMEWHERE. I know, I know... Some people have legitimate reasons for being where they are... However, those people only represent a fraction of the overall homeless population.

If you want to give a homeless man something, give him what he asks for. Personally, I don't give homeless people anything, only because I worked for over a year in a homeless shelter and learned that there are tons of programs out there that help homeless people, and that they don't have to be out on the streets bothering people who work hard for their money. Of course they usually use the money to buy alcohol and/or drugs, but if you truly want to give without being attached to how they spend the money, just give them money. You should know, though, that homeless people who ask for hand-outs have many many many social services available to them, shelters that serve free food, shelters that give free counseling, housing, etc. There is no need for people in our society to be begging. Also, I've noticed in the past that sometimes when people give homeless people food, they become enraged. Believe me, you don't want to piss off a homeless person. They're all mentally ill, socially retarded, and many of them are dangerous.

Well if you give him food, then you know for sure that he will get something to eat. And don't forget to give him something to drink with the food. And if you are really in a generous mood, then you could give him a couple of dollars to. Whatever you do to help the needy is a good deed.

Food. Not cash. I was parked in front of a Mini market when approached by a guy asking for $$. I offered to take him inside to buy him a sandwich, but he really wanted the $$ to go across the street for a beer and turned the sandwich down.

I always prefer to give them food so that I know that my gift is going towards a good use. They may do things with money that I wouldn't agree with.

Sportsnite had a great line with this. "... it is not like these guys are just one chance away from making it, for most of them the clock has pretty much run out, so what is wrong with giving them a little Novocaine to get them through one more unimaginably hard night?"
I say give them money, they can use it to buy just a little bit of happiness. Ask your self, are you giving to make them happy, or yourself?
