Here is a story that I thought might be appropriate...

A United States soldier was attending some college courses between assignments. He had completed missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. One of the courses had a professor who was an avowed atheist and a member of the ACLU.

One day the professor shocked the class when he came in. He looked to the ceiling and flatly stated, "God, if you are real, then I want you to knock me off this platform. I'll give you exactly 15 minutes." The lecture room fell silent. You could hear a pin drop. Ten minutes went by and the professor proclaimed, "Here I am God. I'm still waiting." It got down to the last couple of minutes when the soldier got out of his chair, went up to the professor, and cold-****** him knocking him off the platform. The professor was out cold. The soldier went back to his seat and sat there, silently. The other students were shocked and stunned and sat there looking on in silence. The professor eventually came to, noticeably shaken, looked at the soldier and asked, "What the hell is the matter with you? Why did you do that?"

The soldier calmly replied, "God was too busy today protecting America's troops who are protecting your right to say stupid crap and act like a dumbass. So, He sent me."

The troops need our support, but they are not automatically blessed by being fighters.

Historical example:

Washington issued the following order to his troops:

Colonel Washington has observed that the men of his regiment are very profane and reprobate. He takes this opportunity to inform them of his great displeasure at such practices and assures them that if they do not leave them off, they shall be severely punished. The officers are desired, if they hear any man swear or make use of an oath or execration, to order the offender twenty-five lashes immediately, without court-martial. For the second offense, he will be more severely punished.3

Washington’s firm opposition to profanity in the military never wavered, as evidenced by military orders he issued on several occasions throughout the American Revolution. For example:

The General most earnestly requires and expects a due observance of those articles of war established for the government of the army which forbid profane cursing, swearing and drunkenness; and in the like manner requires and expects of all officers and soldiers not engaged on actual duty, a punctual attendance on Divine Service to implore the blessings of Heaven upon the means used for our safety and defense. 4 GENERAL ORDERS, CAMBRIDGE, JULY 4, 1775

IOW, God will bless, if they will bless the God of heaven.

Speaking as an old soldier myself, not as a civilian.

I VERY MUCH AGREE WITH YOUR STATEMENT!!!
HOOAH to that..
I really appreciate when I hear people make statements such as yours; it really infuriates me when I hear news of others brutally attacking a soldier just because he is in the military. This actually was in the news today from my local area.
I pray that all Americans and people world wide will realize the sacrifices our troops make on a daily basis.
There has been too many deaths of our troops as of lately.. It all hits very close to home..
I miss my husband and I pray every night for him and all the troops; AMEN

A LITTLE PERSPECTIVE
Your alarm goes off, you hit the snooze and sleep for another 10 minutes. He stays up for days on end.
-- --
You take a warm shower to help you wake up. He goes days or weeks without running water.
-- --
You complain of a "headache", and call in sick. He gets shot at, as others are hit, and keeps moving forward.
-- --
You put on your anti war/don't support the troops shirt, and go meet up with your friends. He still fights for your right to wear that shirt.
-- --
You make sure you're cell phone is in your pocket. He clutches the cross hanging on his chain next to his dog tags.
-- --
You talk trash on your "buddies" that aren't with you. He knows he may not see some of his buddies again.
-- --
You walk down the beach, staring at all the pretty girls. He walks the streets, searching for insurgents and terrorists.
-- --
You complain about how hot it is. He wears his heavy gear, not daring to take off his helmet to wipe his brow.
-- --
You go out to lunch, and complain because the restaurant got your order wrong. He does not get to eat today.
-- --
You make your bed and wash your clothes. He wears the same things for months, but makes sure his weapons are clean.
-- --
You go to the mall and get your hair redone. He doesn't have time to brush his teeth today.
-- --
You are angry because your class ran 5 minutes over. He is told he will be held an extra 2 months.
----
You call your girlfriend and set a date for that night. He waits for the mail to see if there is a letter from home.
-- --
You hug and kiss your girlfriend, like you do everyday. He holds his letter close and smells his love's perfume.
-- --
You roll your eyes as a baby cries. He gets a letter with pictures of his new child, and wonders if they'll ever meet.
-- --
You criticize your government, and say that war never solves anything. He sees the innocent tortured and killed by their own government and remembers why he is fighting.
-- --
You hear the jokes about the war, and make fun of the men like him. He hears the gun fire and bombs.
-- --
You see only what the media wants you to see. He sees the bodies lying around him.
-- --
You are asked to go to the store by your parents. You don't. He does what he is told.
-- --
You stay at home and watch TV. He takes whatever time he is given to call and write home, sleep, and eat.
-- --
You crawl into your bed, with down pillows, and try to get comfortable. He crawls under a tank for shade and a 5 minute nap, only to be woken by gun fire
-- --
You sit there and judge him, saying the world is a worse place because of men like him. If only there were more men like him

I disagree, asking for God blessing the troops assumes both that the troops are religious and that you need to be religious to support the troops. I support the troops and was in the military just a couple of years ago, but being an atheist there's no way I would utter that phrase. In fact, I went to support a government in which such a phrase is completely optional, and the state and religion will be forever seperated by a wall of seperation.
