First of all, and most importantly, find out EXACTLY where the money goes. If an organization can not tell you then do not give anything to them. The best thing to do is donate to a local charity that does not have any national affiliations. Years ago, while working for a company, I was on a Grant Committee. Eight of us divided up a list (2 people on each team) and interviewed local organizations. My employer's number one rule was "we will not give a grant to any organization that wants to use the money to hire more people. The money must be used for improvements or equipment". As we interviewed organizations we had to tell each one of them this. We awarded organizations money for new rooves, wheel chair ramps, computers, copiers etc. Speak with your company and find out exactly how they wish to spend their money. If they do indeed wish to donate to charity then ask them the big question; for an organization to hire more people or for repairs/equipment? Local organizations truly appreciate all the assistance they can get. A new roof or wheel chair ramp - those are things you can point to and tell your friends/family "my company provided that!"

Why don't you donate it here at home? There are many people in the U.S. that could use a helping hand as well. And please, don't think that they are all covered by welfare because they aren't at all.
The benefits of donating to charity are tax writeoffs and advertising if you chose to go that route.

Most charities are 100% tax deductible, so that's a benefit, but most importantly... you'll be giving to the poor and what's more rewarding than that?! You'll be awarded and acknowledged for it. =)
