Cats have different meows, is it a distressed meow?

If this is a new cat, you will eventually learn the different tones and sounds and what they mean.

Some cats are very verbal and just meow when you ask a question to them. You will have to observe more and see what is going on when your cat is crying. Is he asking for food, asking for attention, is there fresh water in his/her dish. Is he asking for treats? Some cats meow loudly when they are angry, some cats meow loudly while sitting in a widow and watching birds or other animals they see outside. Only you can tell in due time why. If you think something is wrong with your cat take him/her to the vet and see if there is a medical conditon going on. Is your cat neutered? It is almost impossible to give you an answer from here. Cats have different crys for different reasons..

if it is meowing all the time, quite possibly something is bothering it. take a look at your cat does it look distressed in any way, if not then it is just meowing. your cat might just want attention. there are those that are silent and only moew when upset, then there are those that want constant sttention.

my guess you are not home very much out of the day and your cat is cooped up inside all alone, try spending more time with it or get another cat and see if that works.

If your cat is Siamese, they "cry" all the time, and are very vocal.
The "meow" in most cats is said to humans, and usually it means "feed me." Cats do not generally meow to fellow cats.
Long, drawn out "crying" may mean that a female (un-spayed) cat is in heat.
For a male (non-Siamese) constant "crying" may mean the cat is suffering painful urination, or can't urinate at all, because of an infection, or bladder-stones. This might be a deadly condition for male cats, so have a Vet examine him right away.

You really didn't say how the cat is acting otherwise. If he is "crying" there will be other signs that he is in pain. Does he flench when you touch him anywhere? Is he frequently going to his litter box? Are his "stools" normal? Is he scratching a certain area more? Or is he just coming up to you and meowing?

In fact cats do cry sounds like humans. It will take some time to understand their language. After some years with cats & dogs environment, I know what my animals say. If they are lonel, crying or happy or just conversing with each other. This is OT a talent or unique, it is only a matter of experience.

Cats don't cry... animals never cry. They just feel sad in their soul.
