A gun is an artillery piece, the only thing a handheld firearm can be called is a rifle,pistol,carbine,shotgun, ect. or a firearm.

According to the dictionary on Yahoo a gun is "A weapon consisting of a metal tube from which a projectile is fired at high velocity into a relatively flat trajectory". So a rifle or a pistol or even air soft rifles are considered to be a gun.

A gun is an artillery piece that must be moved by jackasses commonly refered to( loosely and in polite company) as artillerymen. If you capable of carrying a gun I'd buy you a beer in a dive I know in Diego.Theres a couple guys there I don't like

Because when I got drafted into the US Army back in 1951, the drill Sargent showed us quickly that "This is my rifle and this is my gun". That was enough for me, at the time. I didn't ask any questions.

Indoctrination. Different services call their firearms differently, I for example call mine a weapon since I went with the Army. Marines call 'em rifles and so on.

The only reason and time they make you do that is in Basic where they indoctrinate you with your service's traditions and doctrines for one, and another reason is for discipline. You learn to do as you are told.

I remember my ex husband having this little saying after he came out of basic training 22 year ago. It went: This is my weapon, this is my gun! This ones for fighting, this ones for fun!

i think its to prevent confusion making it weapon specific, gun for pistol, rifle for a rifle.

Its just the way it is. Just like you spell Marine with a capital M and say "this recruit" in boot camp rather than "I".
