I think that they should at the VERY LEAST thank the customer for the business and tell them to have a nice day. Even though they don't make tons of money, it IS their job, so they should try to do it well and with a certain degree of courtesy. If they hate it THAT much, then they should find another job. If they're not educated enough to find something else, perhaps they should work on getting more education or training.

Some people really hate it when clerks are overbearing or hovering in the store. Well, perhaps the clerk could try saying "if there is anything you need, please let me know and I'll help you find it." Simple, huh?

So long as they're not rude and obnoxious I'm cool. I don't expect huzzahs and handstands for me along with fanfare just because I came to McDonald's for a burger and fries or when I pick up a quart of motor oil at wal-mart. I mean let's face it they're cashiers at a store. Their relationship to me is nothing more than taking my money for my items. Once the money has changed hands and I'm on my way out the door that's pretty much the end of it.

To be honest I find it annoying when they're following me allover the place like a lost puppy when I'm trying to buy something. Seriously I'm not 2 years old, I can figure out my way to the cash register on my own. If I have a question I'll ask.

Wow.....is it any wonder our society is in the state it is? I mean you can't even justify a smile and a pleasant comment? I'm under paid, I hate my job, I'm tired, it's not my job? I mean with comments like that....you won't have jobs soon.

Green is Clean had it right! It is your job to represent the company you are working for in a pleasant & efficient manner. Believe it or not, the customer is your employer. I agree, you will get a**holes sometimes. Not everyone who walks up to your counter is interested that you are even alive. And abusive customers should be handled as such....your employer/boss should be backing you up (yeah yeah I know, most of them don't) ....but, not all customers deserve to be treated with disdain.

I myself always say hello to the clerks. I'm not interested in a long indepth conversation....but civility is required. The clerk and the customer are both human beings and both deserved to be treated with respect!

Think about the last time a stranger smiled at you and said "I hope you have a pleasant day"...didn't it make you feel just a little better????

Have a nice day! or not

Yes I do think it is rude. I live in Florida where I think there are the most rude people. I went to NYC and a clerk there said have a nice day and I had forgotten what that sounded like.

Yes I do. Being a clerk, you are in customer service...that means SERVING THE CUSTOMER. Customers may not want to have a lengthy conversation, but they want common courtesy. Eye contact, a smile, and some vocal recognition is a MUST in my book. However, it works both ways. If that treatment is given and the customer is rude, you owe them no more than silence.

For all of those that say they are just underpaid clerks so you don't blame them if that's how they act...get standards! No matter what your job, take pride in it...do it the best you can, look at it with optimism and don't drown in your own self pity!

It's not good customer relations, but I wouldn't characterize it as rude. It is something that may cause some customers (like yourself) to feel slighted and some of those will take their business elsewhere. On balance, it is good business to be courteous and friendly to customers. Most of us, I think, don't care as long as the clerk (or salesperson or whatever) is not overtly rude or profane. When I go to 7-Eleven, I'm not interested in striking up a friendship---I just want to get in an out with a minimum of hassle. But I'm not going to take my business elsewhere if they say "hello" as I enter the store or when I check out.

If they do not want to be clerks, then they should not be. That is the job they chose.

Yes, I think that it is rude if they do not say thank you at least. When you work in sales, or wherever, you represent that company, etc. It is a reflection. You do not want to be known for rudeness because I won't go there and give them my money.

I think it would be really rude, but what's even more rude is when a clerk says it & customers don't respond. These days they look at you as if you're from another planet & can't be understood, when you sy hi.

Yes, it is rude. I'm sure they were trained to make the customer feel valued, not unimportant. There's a lot of competition out there and I won't spend my money somewhere I don't feel appreciated. And, come on, we aren't immature children here (or are we??). Even if a customer is rude, that is a bad reflection on the customer. Is it necessary to get down to that level, too? (Monkey see, monkey do??) Weren't you raised better? Shame on you for encouraging people to be rude and self-absorbed. Not that I'm Emily Post or anything, but come on! We don't have to be so rude and disconnected!
