Well... where I live people eat very late - too late in fact. (probably 8 or 9). I do the same.
But, in terms of health, it is probably better to eat by 7 or 8. Personally, I couldn't even fathom someone eating dinner at 5pm. I don't know anyone that does that, the healthy ones or the not so healthy ones.
If you are trying to lose weight, best bet is to eat by 7, and also eat lightly. Eat 5-6 meals, none of them huge, each day. It keeps your metabolism flying.

it really doesnt matter how late you eat. its just an old wives tale, really.
all that matters is that its healthy and you have time to digest it. but even then, i think you can sleep right after dinner and not have a problem.
another thing to remember is that if you eat a late dinner, eat a late breakfast. you have to space out your meals. the best way is to eat little snackish meals. you can have 6 a day instead of eating just 3 times. (2 of the 6 should be big though) that way you're eating every few hours and you always have something in your system, your body always has nutrients.
also, 5 p.m. is REALLY early. its like the early birds dinner at the nursing home. you should eat a big meal around 6-8, four hours or more before bed

Too late for what? It's a bit late for lunch. I prefer dinner to be after 9 pm.

For weight loss, it is usually recommended that you should not eat dinner after 6 pm. If you have to have something else, eat a piece of fruit.

It's not the time you eat but how many calories per day you consume. You need to break them up and eat several times per day and eat balanced meals. What time of day and how late you eat doesn't have anything to do with loosing weight. The only thing it might affect is how you sleep at night if you eat something too heavy or spicy right before going to bed.

No because most people work until 5. Many families eat around 7 now. Doctors, however, say you shouldn't really eat past 8/9.
