Kinda depends where your from...I live in the south and we use Winter wheat and rye mixed with clover and turnips and other greens.with some .but it dosent freeze hard down in Alabama

It really depends on the size of your plot. Many people leave corn standing, but that requires a larger plot, clover is the good all around standby, any oats or cerial grains, winter wheat, there are all kinds of different blends on the market these days, check out the Whitetail Institute web page, they have all the blends listed with their best usage, and nutritional information.

Clover , alfalfa are low cover(short) they are also sweet
most anything you would feed a horse or cow.
