Your train choices from LAX are very limited (you'll need to take a shuttle to the green line, then transfer a couple of times to go anywhere interesting.).

I would recommend going to the lower level and catching a Flyaway shuttle to Union Station (don't take the one going to Van Nuys!). For $6 you get a round trip to downtown. Union Station is a beautiful and busy Amtrak/commuter rail/subway/light rail station just north of downtown and adjacent to both the historic Pueblo and chinatown. It's used for many movie and TV shoots and is a destination unto itself. From there, you have many choices. Here are some possibilities:

Take a Downtown Dash bus (25 cents a ride) and tour downtown. You can see:
-The Pueblo and Olvera Street (where Los Angeles was founded)
-Little Tokyo
-The Music Center (with Disney Concert Hall)
-Grand Central Market, Central Library, Biltmore Hotel
-Chinatown

Or, get on the Red Line subway heading toward North Hollywood and get off at Hollywood and Highland. See the Grauman's chinese theater, Ripley's Believe it or Not Museum, Koday Theater, the Hollywood walk of fame, and all the freaks that live/hang out there.

Or, keep going on the Red Line to the next stop and visit Universal Studios. You won't have enough time to go into the theme park, but you can hang out for a while at Universal Citywalk. They have lots of shopping and dining there.

Whatever you do, make sure you leave plenty of time to get back. The Flyaway shuttle takes carpool lanes so it's usually a quick trip, but you never know how things will go in LA traffic. Have fun!

Just catch a cab to Manhattan Beach, check out the pier, sunbathe, people watch and eat, and catch a cab back. It's about 4.8 miles away.

i'd suggest Santa Monica Pier and 3rd st. Promenade, lots of shopping and very relaxing place to hang out and it will definetly fit into your time frame.
