windows me. hit cntrl/alt/delete & box is blank. shows 1 blank rectangle[filled with white] which can be deleted. the blank rectangle disappears, the box is white & then i can only shut down.
seems i need an explorer program running.
any clues?

Always reboot 3 times before checking into hardware problems. It's amazing how often reboots solve the unsolvable. In your case I'd advise checking your monitor connections. Look for bent pins, and clean your contacts. Since your screen is showing you something; this indicates the monitor is working. Next plug in a different monitor to see if it's a software problem. If the second monitor works, it's not the software. Be very careful when messing with CRT monitors, and or power supplies. These are the only real dangerous things on a computer. CRTs are basically very large capacitors. They can hold a lethal charge for several days after being unplugged.
What OS are you running? And what type of monitor is it?
