almost all of the 12x zoom digicams out there these days have the equivalent range of a 35mm film camera with a lens of 36mm to 432mm.

12x optical zoom means the focal length of the lens can change 12-fold. So it depends on the minimum focal length of the lens in question. For instance a canon s2is has a minimum focal length of 6mm so 12x on that gives its maximum focal length of 72mm at the telephoto end of its zoom range. Thing is that's difficult to comprehend for people used to thinking about these numbers in terms of old 35mm film cameras. So manufacturers all quote 35mm camera equivalents for these zoom ranges - for the s2is it's 36mm "wide-angle" - 432mm telephoto. The reason for the difference in absolute focal lengths is the relatively much smaller surface area for image capture of compact digital ccd/cmos chips, as compared to 35mm film.

It really depends upon the make of camera which can have different focal ranges. Typically, a 12x superzoom camera would have a zoom range of about 36mm to 432mm in 35mm terms.

Pick a random starting point and multiply by 12.
For example, 50-600mm
or 20-240mm.
or 100-1200mm.
A few 12x lenses exist on 'compact' cameras, but for (digital) SLR cameras, I believe 11x zoom is the max. Nikon has an 18-200mm (11x) and Sigma has a 50-500mm (10x) for example.

It should mean 600 mm.

1x is 50mm. multiply it by 12

But these days, the word x denotes the max focal length/min. focal length in a zoom range in any zoom lens.
So if a zoom lens is 28-280 then it refers to 10x zoom. Ideally it should be a 50-600 mm (In my knowledge, such a zoom doesn't exist)
