Oh, of course ... you should dress up like tin-foil girl. Remember a nice pyramid hat really makes the look.

In most states, you're required to appear to the jury summons or they will come to your house and arrest you. Seriously, they mean business.
Even if you don't have a vehicle. They'll expect you to walk to a bus station or take a taxi. That's just the way it is. I've been to jury duty a lot and the judge doesn't accept any excuses when people don't appear. They're 'no-nonsense' all the way and I've seen the judges get very mad and start lecturing everyone who did show up about how that person was getting arrested.
But here's the good news: Once you appear, being the parent or custodian of an elderly person or child will get you out of it. I believe the policy is that if the children are under 13 and would be left alone without your supervision that you have a legal excuse, and you won't have to worry about being on a jury.
Just make sure you arrange to show up to the first summons appearance. Get a babysitter and find someone to drive you, or take a bus. They don't play games. A summons is serious. You're in contempt of court if you don't show up.
In a few states, you can legally respond to the summons by calling in to a number listed on the jury summons. That's rare. But if there's a number then you might be able to take advantage of that.

If it is truly a hardship you just need to tell them and they will excuse you. If not, you need to do your civic duty.

when they ask you if you have heard about the case, tell them that you have. That means that you already have an opinion on the case and therefore they will not chose you.
