You can hook up an amplifier's speaker output into a 6 volt circuit with a light in it. Hook up a microphone to the amplifier. Shine the light at an old sound movie projector where the sound is picked up off the film and talk into the microphone. The sound will come out of the movie projector. You will be modulating a light beam with a signal. Signals that are sent down fiber optic cables use this principle of modulated light waves.

Hypothesis: weather forcasters are accurate 70% of the time.
What you need to do is to determine how accurate weather forcasters are. You need to chart the daily prediction for the following three days, then using the data from those days when they come, you can chart and make percentages as to precipitation and temperature accuracy. My daughter did this over a two week span and won a gold medal at the Western ew York Science Congress. What is great is that weather is something that is interesting and easy. There are tons and tons of websites about it, not to mention books and such. Here are some web sites to other good ideas:

8th grade science fair project ideas are sometimes hard to find. However here are some good ideas to start with.
What concentration of bleach is needed to kill mold?
Which colors and materials cool the fastest?
Can magnetism get rusty old iron out of nice clean sand?
Where in my neighborhood is it most polluted?
Which cheese will get the moldiest?
Can I prove that there may be bias in poll taking?
How does the size of a pumpkin compare to the number of seeds in it?
In choosing your project, make sure you're interested to do it. Otherwise, you won't find it fun to do...
Here's an example of an interesting project:
Project title:
How does the sugar concentration vary in different brands of apple juices?
Description:
The purpose of this experiment was to determine the sugar composition of various brand name apple juices, unknown brand apple juices, and juice blends. Then use that information to calculate the percentage of each kind of juice in the blends and compare the name brand apple juices to the unknown brands of apple juice to see if they are labeled truthfully. I became interested in this idea while looking through a list of ideas provided by my science teacher. The sugar content interested me and since our town produces so many apples, I chose apple juice. I got the idea of truth in labeling and juice percentages while discussing this idea with my science teacher. The information gained from this experiment will help consumers to know if the manufacturers are labeling their products correctly.
Check it out!

If you want to keep your kid interested, do something completely different. If he is at all interested in electronics or engineering, try making a Battlebot/robot. Guaranteed that will make a cool project.
