I have one cat that sleeps on my bed at night (and gets under the covers with me in the cool mornings.) She tolerates my tossing and turning, getting up in the middle of the night, etc. and just adjusts her posture or sleeping place.
Another cat starts the night on my bed where she gets chin scrunches and head pets and stays for the hour or so I read before turning out the light. Then she goes to find her comfy bed in the closet for the rest of the night.
Cats are very independent about where they choose to nap and sleep. I don't think you can get her to do anything she chooses not to do.

The only slightly sarcastic answer would be to go out and buy an expensive cat bed... the cat will then decide that yours is much nicer!
I have nine cats, each from a shelter/rescue over several years. Almost all of them sleep on my bed- probably because they spent the first week or so in my room, getting acclimated to the house, to their litterbox, and to the other cats. I also make it a habit, when I'm going upstairs to bed, to scoop up a cat and take them with me. Pile the bed high with nice fluffy comforters, and I don't know many cats that could resist it.
I have so many cats, though, that not all of them sleep with me every night- I usually have 3-4 in bed with me, the others in the room nearby. One night when the heat went out, I did have all nine plastered up against me in bed...

I'm not so sure that I would want catnip flakes in my bed...
Plus... catnip tends to make cats playful or a lil' funky....
We have 3 cats...
They take turns sleeping in the bed during the night...
Sometimes one will spend the night on the bed or my husband & I will end up with all 3...
Yes, cats are pretty independant but they can often be trained for fairly simple tasks by their stomacks. Instead of keeping catnip on your nightstand, I would keep your cat's favorite "kity treat".
Call the cats name & shake the treat or rattle the bag...
In hearing the sound the cat should come running...
Reward the cat with a treat.
While he/she is given a snack on your bed, re-enforse the package sound. Repete this every day untill comming to your room/bed is part of the cat's daily routine.
Good Luck...

If your a single I would not advise it your luck most people want the opposite. If you have someone over to spend the night with do you want the cat in bed to. Let the cat sleep were he or she wants to. Its not right to try so hard to get the cat to do what you want then throw it off when company comes.

cats are by far the most independent animal there is. they have a brain and know how to use it, when they have a mind to. your closet sleeper enjoys the presleep attention then knows when its time to vacate, so you can go to sleep.
every so often i allow my cat to sleep with me(when she is cold and wants to cuddle) that does not last long as she sleeps in the middle of my bed. i have a queen size , and she literally sleeps dead center. i cannot sleep unless it is crossways.
do not be upset by the closet sleeper, sleeping elsewhere, enjoy the attention your kitty gives to you when its time for you to go to sleep.

you could try catnip like the other person said, or you could just accept the fact that cats are independent and if you are sleeping, you won't know the difference if the cat is with you or not!

When my cat was little, i used to carry him with me to bed every night. Now he either follows me up to bed or meows at me to carry him up. (he's 2 now) Maybe just try putting your cat in bed with you every night and immediately start petting it. This may eventually work!
