just two more points, one, i dont live in a hard water area and two, i tried bottled water and its worse!! i found out bottled water makes scum worse because it contains minerals and this causes scum, therefore i am thinking that the tap water has been injected with minerals too.

While all of the answers your other respondants gave were partially correct and some what amusing, some of the "Twits" that answer these questions sometimes make me bonkers.

The reality is some thing to do with the water, but the tannins in the teas rise to the top and settle, like with coffee, if you use filtered or bottled water, bring it only to a light boil and steep it until you are sure it is ready, this will let you off without the scum.

I worked in a 5 star hotel, and we served High tea everyday, and we had a representative from Twining's come in and instruct the staff on proper tea making etuiquette.

Tea Scum

How long do you leave the teabag in the water ?!?!?

I find that if you leave it too long the impurites in the tea settle on the surface of the water leaving horrible bits floating in your tea.

I'm one of those people that adds the milk to the tea first, I find this way the tea is less scummy because you only leave the bag in long enough to get the tea just at the right colour.

Most of the tea in teabags isn't of particullally high quality, even the more well known brands.

It's probably the fact that you live in a hard water area, it's limescale deposits I think. I went to Hull once and I noticed it was REALLY bad there.

Maybe get a Brita filter or a kettle with an inbuilt filter? You *will* notice the difference...

Buy cups with lids... I find that my tea doesn't scum when I use those... also the tea doesn't get cold too quickly when I get caught up in answering questions on Yahoo Answers....

i use bottled water for my tea and i still get scum... more or less depending on how oily my lips are... but it's always fairly limited... if it's a lot of scum and not just a thin layer, then yeah, probably the water. if it's just a thin layer, wash your lips before you drink tea if it really bugs you.
