Don't you realize we do the same thing in English-speaking societies?

Jesus (aramaic), in Hebrew, is Yeshua.
Translated into Roman, that's Joshua.

Joshua and Jesus are the same name :)

Actually Jesus in the Greek variation of Joshua which is Hebrew. Both mean Saviour. There is nothing wrong with it, you are write. I think it is more of a cultural differents. In English speaking societies it is sort of a paranoa of using the name of the Lord by us mortal sinners. The thing is that Jesus parents probably did call him Yashua or Joshua on a daily basis, not the greek Jesus. Many people back then in Judea had both a Hebrew or Aramaic nome and a Greek name. Simon Peter for instance was also know by his greek name Cephus.

Yes it is a funny thing isn't it.

I've never known anyone to attack the Spanish for naming their kids Jesus.. although it's not quiet Jesus, it's pronounced Hesus..

But, I really don't agree with it at all. I think it's kinda sacrilegious. It's like naming your child "God". That's not cute. I just believe certain names should be sacred.

And, the whole Joshua argument, okay... but seeing that big parts of the Bible were translated from Latin, the translators found it important to keep Jesus' aramic name as a way of seperating Him. There were others named Jesus' at the time, but out of respect, ppl kinda stopped doing it.

I'm sure in Spanish culture, it's a way of respecting Jesus to call their sons by His name, but to me, it just belittles His name.

Personal opinion, can't effect others.. won't attack others either, but certainly don't like it.

Unfortuantely, many are uneducated.

People see the name, and becuase many do not know how to properly pronounce it in the correct tongue of the person so named, they take offense.

While Jesus was a spiritual leader, that doesn't mean no one else should have the same name- in fact, to be named after a spiritual leader should be an honor.

I can see why people would want to name their children after him- it gives them something to live up to. While I personally think he was just another man, and just happened to get immortalized in the pages of the bible, he did, after all, make many miracles happen for his time. It is not something you see so often these days.

I doubt people name their children after Jesus assuming that their child is Him, but that would seem to be the prevalent assumption. While alot of people may not of heard of Jesus Bashing, I have heard it many times.

I assume the "we" are the non-Hispanic members of the planet. I am not aware that we were attacking the Spanish for naming their kids Jesus. I certainly wouldn't.

Well why do they name their kids Jesus? When we pray don't we use the name Jesus? That name is Holy, I do not think it is meant for ANY of us to be named that. BUT if I encounter a person named Jesus which I have in the past, I call him Jay.

Who's doing this attacking? First I've heard of it and I'm a religion hating atheist! You'd think I'd know every possible way of arguing with the religiously inclined...

I do my best not to attack anyone physically or verbally. People may name their children whatever they wish. I just hope the kids aren't burdened with outrageous names that they will have to live down their entire lives.
