After washing my hands in a public toilet, I always take an extra length of tissue to cover my hand when opening the exit door. People wash their hands then just grab these handles without thinking. They are full of germs from the people that just dont bother. Its not enough to just wash your hands in public places, you've got to think about cross transfer germs which are present on all fixed touchable objects!

You are so right to do all that and more. I also do that and carry Purell with me in my purse.

Not only do many people not wash their hands in the bathroom...but it's especially gross in a restaurant.

I remember reading that they tested bacterial levels in mints at restaurants (you know as you exit you help yourself) and they found that the mints had both urine and feces matter in them from people who never washed their hands yet dipped into the mints to help themselves...so I have NEVER touched an unwrapped candy from a public place since....not even a wrapped one for that matter.

Shopping carts are the most contaminated surfaces along with doors and handles in public places and you can just imagine the subways....Purell, Purell, Purell! LOL

I don't care who things it's overdone I would rather be safe than sorry after using or touching anything "public".

Of course handwashing is the first and best thing to do, but if not possible, as soon as I get into my car I will Purell and wash when I get home.

Shopping carts ARE gross. They never wash the meat counter where the meat is sold. You touch the meat you're contaminated, you touch the cart, it's contaminated. It's raw meat people. We all know what you get from raw meat.

The best alternative would be to have wipes in various parts of the supermarket, and if you handle anything gross to wipe the cart and your hands. Those who don't care don't have to bother...but those who do, that would be the best alternative.

And I'm sorry, but not all germs are good for you. Samonella is not something you become "immune" too...it's something that makes you violently ill if you get it and you may have to be hospitalized...so to those of you who know nothing of what you talk about beware...you will learn the hard way when you have to fight something of that makes you so ill you will wish you were dead! :~)

Hi Lilarose,It's a good thing to be hygienic and health conscious. In fact care should be taking in all public places including toilets, seats in trains and buses, restaurants etc, because of germs and communicable diseases. Nevertheless excessive obsession may lead to be paranoid over it.In a way germs are part of our ecosystem. Our body contains well over 10 million, there is a symbiotic relationship with some bacteria in humans. Enter amoeba hystolica helps the process of digestion in our intestine. The vaccines we take to prevent certain diseases such cholera,tetanus,tuberculosis,... are actually a small part of the germ introduced to our system to enable us development immunity against an eventual attack.
The best option is perhaps have a good personal hygiene by washing the hands regularly especially after visiting the toilets and after an outing.Using disinfectants when necessary but live your life and think less about germs.

Any parent knows that the only thing worse than taking care of a sick child is taking care of a sick child while the rest of the family (including you) is also sick. For this reason, it’s hard to criticize anyone for doing whatever he or she can in a true attempt to prevent illnesses. The issue of the shopping-cart cover, however, is a sticky matter. There are two camps.

Camp One doesn’t believe precautions like a special cover for a shopping cart does anything but complicate parenting, which is already a complicated enough job.

In this camp is Dr. Dennis Woo, chairman of the department of pediatrics at UCLA-Santa Monica. “The fact that children do so well [without extreme protective measures] is a huge testament to the power of our immune systems,” says Woo.

He also points out that covers even present their own risks. Most notably, as a potential tripping hazard for kids who try to get out of the cart. Furthermore, a cover could be as germy as the handle if parents don’t keep it spotless. And if you have more than one child it would be highly impractical, he says.

“Good hand-washing and being a little selective about where you go makes sense to me. But nothing beyond that. Certainly, not a shopping-cart cover,” says Woo, the father of three.

He doesn’t mean you need to hibernate to be safe, either. Just don’t knowingly take your children around people who are sick

I just wash my hands and I wash any fresh fruit or vegetables I am going to eat. The only time I use paper to open a door is if the bathroom is very dirty. Without germs we could not live. They are a natural part of life. I do not clean shopping carts before using them I don't have clothes cleaned before trying them on. I buy canned goods off the shelf. I do carry some wipes in my car to clean my hands before and after I eat fast food in my car.

It's called cross contamination from pathogens and they are every where not just on handles.....
try having OCD and being a Nurse okay,
i practically use rubbing alcohol on my kids when they come in the door!!
No I'm not that bad, but i wash my hands at least 200 times a day! (guessing) Think about all of the sick people out there and they try to shake your hand..... Think about the bar tender who opens the beer twisting the top off with the whole hand... NASTY
the money you touch every day.................
the people in society have no idea the microbes they carry in their own pockets. What do you think is living on your keyboard?
I get the antibacterial lotions from bath and body works and carry it in my pocket and my sons diaper bag. I always wash the kids hands as well as mine ( i practically have washed the skin off from working as a nurse) and i use common sense. Kids are gonna be kids, if i see boogies, we wash with wipes, not public bathrooms. germs are everywhere, so in my life i keep an abundance of sanitizing lotions at hand!

I'm with Helen on this one. The more you worry about it, the less chance you are giving your immune system to do what it does best.

Also remeber that countless studies have shown that the worst places for germs that you least expect. The toilet seat is supposed to be one of the most germ free places in the house!

Yes there are germs but there has been suggestions that the rise in allergies and asthma is partly due to children not being exposed to these things.

If you feel that you 'have to' do this then maybe there is a touch of OCD going on (happens to the best of us). If you feel this is controlling you life then maybe its time to get help.... Talk to your doctor for a referral.

Germs are everywhere even in the air we breathe..the clothes we wear. Even other germs are helpful for our immune system. Handwashing is one important thing we should all do.If soap and water is not availbale, an antibacterial hand gel will do. I always carry mine in my bag.Hope this helps. God bless!

I got news for everyone........bacteria and e. coli is your best friend.
E.coli in your intestines break down food particulate into molecules that cane be injested and distributed into the bloodstram, like vitamins, good cholesterol, and such. If we
didn't have bacteria, we would not live. Germs and bacteria are our friends!
