I read that one country was collecting hair and feathers to clean up their oil spill. Does this really work?

There are several ways to clean up an oil spill. One of the most important tools is called a 'boom', which keeps the oil from spreading, and also collects it. The boom is like a train of floats attached to two boats, or a boat and the shore.

When the oil is gathered into one spot, a large vacuum can skim the oil off the top.

Other ways to clean oil from the water include using chemical dispersants, which break the oil down, burning, and - yes - absorbant items such as feathers and hair - and even some types of shells. There is even bacteria that eats oil!

No one method is universally accepted, however. There is still great debate about which methods do more harm than good.

The Phillipines are not the only country cleaning up an oil spill; Lebanon is trying to clean up a big spill that occured during the recent war there.
