You ought to see the customs dogs at work in the international airports... they have a HUGE list of items to search for...Furs, foods, bombs, weapons, drugs, certain leathers, wines, etc.
Many dogs are trained for just a narrow number of items, but some dogs are trained to catch anything illegal or threatening.
It is funny, that the costums dog of choice is a friendly beagle! He is non-threatening, and just sniffs his way through the crowds, and signals when he finds something in the luggage or on the person...all very harmless seeming...

Its a good question really. I think dogs can be trained to find different things. I've read books and seen on t.v. the amazing things dogs can find with just their sense of smell. I saw a dog that could find bugs in an infested home faster than any man or machine. And another dog found that his owner has a mole on her back and seemed to be obsessed with it, always digging at her back and sniffing and whining...come later to find out that it was cancerous.
And some dogs sniff out drugs and gun powder. I think you can train a dog to find these certain things, and other dogs its just second nature to know what isn't right and will show you. I can't answer your question really (and I don't think anyone can) but my opinon is, I guess, it just depends on the dog. So I'm sure you and your friends will be debating on this to no end :)
good luck.

I'm only guessing, but I think the dogs can "sniff out" just about everything their noses are capable of discerning, but they will only go for what they are commanded to do at the time.
Is there a local K-9 unit in your local police department? Why don't you ask someone there who will know the answer?

K9's can be trained to do or detect several things. Most Narcotic detection dogs look for only narcotics, but some are versed in bomb detection too. Also, be careful...most K9's are also trained in protection and bite work.

Each dog is trained in their specialty.
Bombs for bomb dogs
and drugs for drug dogs.
I would assume a highly intelligent dog could be trained to do both, but I believe they usually only have one job and are trained to do it very well!
