Hi Misty.
To be honest, fire extinguisher service is typically entry level at most fire protection companies. Speaking for my company, in Ohio, we look for individuals who have a high-school diploma, good driving record, and decent handwriting and basic math skills. If you have that, and don't mind moderate and consistent lifting, then you qualify for an extinguisher route position. There is some training, but most people can be brought up to speed in a few weeks. In Ohio, you do have to pass a test with the State before you can get your service license and work on your own.
You can place yourself miles ahead of other applicants if you would consider obtaining a copy of the NFPA 10 standard and familiarizing yourself with it. You can order from from NFPA at the following link (or check with your local library.)

(Most jurisdictions are enforcing the 2002 edition)
Consider looking in your local yellow pages for "fire extinguishers" and contacting the larger companies to see who might be hiring. Cintas has really gotten into fire extinguishers in the Missouri area.
Here are a couple of other companies servicing the Missouri area with web sites...
Good luck!

I'm pretty sure that the persons that inspect fire extinguishers dont just do that. I believe a city/county safety inspector does that chore. Best way to find out would be to contact your local fire department, they should at least have a contact number for the saftey inspector. or just google it.
